CONSIDERATE HOTELIERS – NEWS (July, 2006)

Message from Liam Lambert, Chairman, Considerate Hoteliers

Finally, summer is here at last and at Considerate Hoteliers we have cause to celebrate our own bit of sunshine. The new issue of the newsletter is our first in glorious colour and is part of our ever-improving service to our members. Please enjoy the contents and let us know what you think.

Our second cause for celebration is the launch of The Considerate Hotel of  the Year 2006 Awards programme, details of which you will find on our website. This year we have created four challenges. The ultimate winners will have shown that they really can rise to a worthy cause but will in doing so considerably enhance their environmental credentials and, dare I say, have saved money.

I make no excuses for beating the drum about environmental issues. We in the hotel industry have a huge part to play in improving the environmental quality of life for our guests, visitors, local residents and staff. We should be setting the example for others to follow. We really can make a difference. I would however be the first to acknowledge that there are often many complex issues to confront. At the Considerate Hoteliers Association our aim is to help the dedicated hotelier do this by providing sensible and worthwhile advice and assistance. So, take full advantage of your membership and if you need help, ask. If you are not a member, then why not join us?

Now, are you ready for the challenge?

Considerate Hoteliers Awards

The Considerate and Environmentally Responsible Hotel of the Year Awards 2006 were held today at The Master Innholders General Manager’s Conference in the elegant surroundings of The Jumeirah Carlton Tower London, attended by an array of industry “movers and shakers.”

Liam Lambert, Chairman of The Considerate Hoteliers Association and Director/General Manager of The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park commented:

“Both the quality and number of entries in this year’s competition reached new heights and the winners are thoroughly deserving of the highest praise. There are very clear indications that many hoteliers are now prepared to go outside their traditional areas of concern, that of optimum comfort and service for their guests and in addition contribute significantly to the environment and improved quality of life locally, nationally and globally. We do extend our grateful thanks to WRAP for their most generous sponsorship and to The Master Innholders and Wedgwood for providing the platform to make these significant awards.”

Environmentally Responsible Hotel of the Year Sponsored by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme)

In the light of new legislation on waste, including new controls on hazardous waste, government targets for recycling and the increasing costs of sending waste to landfill, the Considerate Hoteliers Association has formed a partnership with WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) for the Environmentally
Responsible Hotel of the Year Award.

Hotels have the potential to play an important role in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill due to the significant amount they generate. On average, a hotel creates around 1kg of waste per guest per night, but up to 60% of a hotel’s
solid waste stream can be sorted for recovery and recycling. Hotels can also influence their guests’ behaviour through waste minimisation messages that can be taken home. This award highlights the initiatives leading hotels in the UK are
taking to reduce the amount of waste they dispose of and the associated costs.

The Environmentally Responsible Hotel of the Year award was presented by Jennie Price, Chief Executive of WRAP, who commented;

“The recent boom in eco-tourism has highlighted the fact
that clients of the hospitality sector are becoming
increasingly aware of the need to take account of their
impact on the environment. The finalists in this award category have all demonstrated a sound understanding of these issues and have adopted environmental practices, which are highly commendable. WRAP is delighted to be sponsoring this new award and we hope it will mark the beginning of a long and productive relationship with the hospitality sector.”

The Considerate Hotel of the Year

Alongside the WRAP sponsored award, Considerate Hoteliers continues to offer hotels that are making a significant contribution to their community and local environment the opportunity to be considered for the Considerate Hotel of the Year Award. This award recognises that hotels are not only businesses, but also an essential part of the communities in which they operate.

The Considerate Hotel of the Year awards were presented by Liam Lambert, Chairman of the Considerate Hoteliers Association and Director/General Manager of The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, who commented;

“This is where hotels have a chance to reach out beyond their normal confines and get fully involved with the local community and surrounding area. Often it is the hotel staff that decide how and where they would like to assist but it does mean the hotel can play a full and meaningful part in the life of the local community, Our two winners in this category, 51 Buckingham Gate and Matfen Hall, proved that with dedication, enthusiasm and innovation they really can make a difference.”

HOTELS CAN SPONSOR TREES !

By sponsoring either one or more trees outside or close to your hotel you can green the environment, encourage bird life and help to improve air quality.  The cost would be £300 per tree, including planting, maintenance and replacement in the event of failure.  At extra cost a brass plaque, denoting the sponsor, can be inserted into the pavement.

For further details, please contact Considerate Hoteliers Committee Member Julian Maslinski, who is also Chairman of Westminster Tree Trust.  Telephone: 020 7828 2161 or e-mail: MslnsJl@aol.com.  Westminster Tree Trust is a registered charity which operates in the City of Westminster.   If a hotel is located outside Westminster, the Trust will advise on how to proceed.

We are preparing a Website and will give you details in due course

The winners of the Considerate Hoteliers Awards 2003 are the Four Seasons Hotel (Considerate Hotel of the Year) and the Buckingham Beales Hotel (Environmentally Friendly Hotel of the Year). The Crowne Plaza London St James was Highly Commended in the Considerate Hotel of the Year category, and West Lodge Park/Hatfield Lodge Hotels who entered a joint submission were Highly Commended in the Environmentally Friendly Hotel of the Year category.

Professor John Forte (Principal, HCIMA Hospitable Climates), was the Independent Judge for the Awards. He commented "In general the standards were high and it was pleasing to see how much good work has been and continues to be done on all environmental issues".

Turning to the winners, he said "Because of the Four Seasons' approach and current standards to the provision of disabled facilities; their well-kept and generously planted garden and conditions of guest use of external facilities; their stunning floral displays in the reception areas and throughout the Hotel, I placed them first in the Considerate Hotel of the Year category. The Buckingham Beales Hotel was notable for the sheer enthusiasm of their "Green Team" which commits them to a target of 90% recycling of all waste by the end of 2003, while their participation in Hospitable Climates and the many initiatives on energy conservation has resulted in reducing their energy consumption and cost by some £14,000 in the last year".

The Awards, kindly donated by Waterford Wedgwood plc, were presented by Dr Garry Felgate, Director, Action Energy, at a lunch at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on Thursday 23rd October 2003. Dr Felgate said "It is exciting to see that both the Winner and the Highly Commended prizes of the 'Environmentally Friendly Hotel of the Year' have been awarded to hotels which include energy efficiency as a major part of their environmental efforts. I hope that this will encourage other hotels to make energy efficiency a priority and take advantage of the free help and advice offered by the Hospitable Climates programme run jointly by Action Energy and the HCIMA".

The event was attended by member hoteliers, and partly sponsored by Euro Property Services

Our maxim is “Caring for YOUR Environment” and if you have a news item about your hotel that relates to the environment please let us know on info@consideratehoteliers.com

Considerate Hoteliers is administered by a general committee, and like most associations is led by a chairman together with a deputy chairman, honorary secretary and honorary treasurer. The committee members have either volunteered or been put forward by their hotels to serve on the committee at the Annual General Meeting (usually in October). The committee meets every six to eight weeks normally early in the morning before their day job starts. In between times communication is undertaken via e-mails and telephone. The association employs a project director on a part-time basis to concentrate on more time consuming issues such as recruitment, direct member contact and policy formulation.

Our current committee is: -

Grevile Bridge (Chairman) Beales Hotels
John Firrell (Secretary/Treasurer) Distinguished Personnel
Paul Brackley - Crowne Plaza London St James
Aidan Fahy - The Stafford
Sue Harley - Royal Lancaster
Mike LeRoy - Westminster City Council
Julian Maslinski
Julian Payne - Ritz
Gaby Rose - Forum for the Future
Ian Maynard- Four Seasons Park Lane

We are always looking for good people to join the committee. If you can spare a little time (a meeting normally lasts 2 hours every six to eight weeks) and are prepared to take on various tasks within the committee we would love to hear from you on info@consideratehoteliers.com An ideal committee make-up is a mix of GM’s, engineers, housekeepers, green team leaders and staff trainers.
